The Glock pistol, sometimes referred to by the manufacturer as Glock "Safe Action" Pistol, is a series of semi-automatic pistols designed and produced by Glock Ges.m.b.H., located in Deutsch-Wagram, Austria. The company's founder, engineer Gaston Glock, had no experience with firearm design or manufacture at the time their first pistol, the Glock 17, was being prototyped. Glock did, however, have extensive experience in advanced synthetic polymers, knowledge of which was instrumental in the company's design of the first successful line of pistols with a polymer frame. Glock introduced ferritic nitrocarburizing into the firearms industry as an anti-corrosion surface treatment for metal gun parts.
Despite initial resistance from the market to accept a "plastic gun" due to durability and reliability concerns, Glock pistols have become the company's most profitable line of products, commanding 65% of the market share of handguns for United States law enforcement agencies as well as supplying numerous national armed forces and security agencies worldwide. This Glock is a third generation one purchased sometime around 1998 or 1999. It replaced my second generation Glock 17. The main reason for this was the third generation added a accessory rail to mount a light. Because this was to be my side arm at work I really wanted the ability to mount a light if I needed to….and as years went by…I needed to.
This Glock started out bone stock and stayed that way the entire time I used it at work. Many people didn’t care for the Glock but I preferred it because it was simple. No safety, no decocking lever, no hammer, no BS…just point and shoot. And if I did have to draw my sidearm to defend myself I didn’t want to have to think, at least not think about disengaging the safety.
During those years I practiced with this gun every week and of course it was the sidearm I used in all my classes. I have no idea of the exact number, but I bet it would be safe to say I’ve fired 20,000 rounds through this gun in the 12 or 13 years I have owned it.
I have no idea why people don’t like the Glock, for all those rounds fired through it I have never had a single FTF or jam. It is a very reliable and easy to shoot gun. Besides that you cannot go wrong with the price. And trust me, I have owned and fired more handguns than most, and I do love my Glock.
Last year, after the gun was retired from work for a few years, I decided to do some upgrades to it since now it would only be used for recreation.
First I bought a simple slip-over grip followed by a Grip Force beavertail adapter, which I must say I like. After that I installed the KKM match barrel with 4 port compensator and a combat slide release. I have had one or two jams since changing out the barrel but I’m sure it just needs some fine tuning from a gunsmith. The Insight M3 light has been on the gun since I bought it. And for the record it has always been on the gun every time I ever fired it. I still haven’t replaced the bulb and it still works perfect.
Normally I steer clear of guns that everyone has…I just don’t like to run with the pack. But I have to give Glock its due credit. They make a great gun and I always felt reassured when I carried mine.
So if you’re out to buy your first handgun take a look at the Glocks. The price is reasonable and it’s a very reliable gun. Don’t buy the junk guns.
