"Field Tested and Reviewed Gear"
Iím a big fan of wheel guns, always have been. I prefer to keep a wheel gun in my house and in my office for personal defense. Now I know itís a myth that magazine springs lose their tension after time from being loaded but I still like the fact that with a wheel gun there is a very slight chance of any type of malfunction when I need the gun to perform. Itís a personal preference.
I keep a S&W 38+P in my office but at home I opted for a little more punch with a .357 magnum. The nice thing about a .357 is you can also use .38 Special rounds as well but not vice versa. I also have a S&W .44 Magnum but I would rather not punch holes in my neighborsí walls if I happen to miss while defending myself.
I have owned a few guns from Ruger and have always been a fan. I have had a Ruger Mini 14, Ruger GP100, a few Ruger 10/22ís and now the SP101. For some reason I have never been a fan of their semi-automatic handguns.
The SP101 I have has a 2.25Ē barrel and I can hit mass at up to 25 yards, I have never tried to hit anything at further distances. At 15 yards my groups are about 3-4 inches and at 10 yards I can bullís-eye the target. I figure since Iím using the gun for home defense I wonít be engaging any targets more than 15 yards away.
This Ruger SP101 is a double action revolver and when cocked has a very crisp light trigger pull. The cylinder holds 5 rounds of .357 Magnum or .38 Special and its functionality is pretty much just like any other double action revolver.
The SP101 is a smaller compact revolver, the grip is wide but short and of course my pinky has nowhere to rest. Not a big deal.
The bottom line really is thatís itís a Ruger, its reliable and every time you pull the trigger it will work.
As always, have fun, be safe and keep shooting.
